Ultraääneksi refers to a sound wave with a frequency higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing. This limit is typically considered to be around 20 kilohertz (20,000 Hz), though it can vary between individuals and decrease with age. While humans cannot consciously hear ultrasound, it is a significant phenomenon in the natural world and has numerous practical applications.

Many animals, such as bats and dolphins, use ultrasound for echolocation, enabling them to navigate, hunt, and communicate in their environment. Bats emit ultrasonic pulses and interpret the returning echoes to create a sonic map of their surroundings, even in complete darkness. Similarly, dolphins use ultrasound for similar purposes, as well as for social interactions.

In technology, ultrasound has a wide range of uses. Medical ultrasound imaging, commonly known as sonography, utilizes high-frequency sound waves to visualize internal body structures. These images are crucial for diagnosing various medical conditions and monitoring fetal development during pregnancy. Industrial applications include ultrasonic cleaning, where high-frequency vibrations dislodge contaminants from surfaces, and ultrasonic welding, used to join materials. Ultrasound is also employed in non-destructive testing to detect flaws within materials. The generation and detection of ultrasound typically involve piezoelectric transducers, which convert electrical energy into mechanical vibrations and vice-versa.
