Ulotrichales is an order of green algae belonging to the class Ulvophyceae, which are primarily marine or freshwater organisms. This group is characterized by its simple, filamentous or unbranched thallus structure, often composed of a single row of cells. The order is named after the type genus *Ulotrichopsis*, though *Ulotrichum* was historically used as the primary representative genus.

Members of Ulotrichales typically exhibit a haploid life cycle with an alternation of generations that is less pronounced than in other algal groups. The thallus is usually uniseriate, meaning it consists of a single row of cells, and may be attached to substrates via a holdfast or rhizoid-like structures. Reproduction in Ulotrichales can occur both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction often involves the formation of zoospores, which are motile cells with two equal flagella, enabling dispersal. Sexual reproduction generally occurs through the fusion of gametes, which may be similar in size (isogamy) or different (anisogamy or oogamy, depending on the species).

Ulotrichales species are found in a variety of aquatic environments, including freshwater ponds, streams, and marine habitats. Some members are epiphytic, growing on other algae or aquatic plants. The order includes both cosmopolitan and regionally restricted species, reflecting its ecological adaptability. Taxonomically, Ulotrichales is closely related to other filamentous green algae, such as the Chaetophorales and Cladophorales, but is distinguished by its specific morphological and reproductive characteristics.

Studies of Ulotrichales contribute to understanding algal evolution, ecology, and biogeochemistry, as these organisms play roles in nutrient cycling and primary production within aquatic ecosystems.
