Ulkokorvatulehdus, commonly known as swimmer's ear, is an inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal, the passage from the outside of the ear to the eardrum. It is most frequently caused by bacteria, though fungi can also be responsible. Moisture trapped in the ear canal, often from swimming or prolonged exposure to humidity, creates a favorable environment for microbial growth. Irritation to the ear canal lining, such as from scratching with cotton swabs or earwax removal, can also predispose an individual to this condition.
