Ulb

Universite libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is a French-speaking public research university in Brussels, Belgium. It traces its origins to 1834, when liberal academics split from the Catholic University of Leuven to establish a non-denominational institution devoted to academic freedom and secular instruction. In the wake of linguistic reforms in the 1960s, the university remained French-speaking and a separate Dutch-speaking institution, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), was created in Brussels.

ULB operates across several campuses in the Brussels-Capital Region, with the main Solbosch campus in Ixelles and additional facilities on the Erasme site and other locations. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across faculties that include sciences, engineering, medicine and health sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, economics, and arts. The university emphasizes research and hosts numerous centers and laboratories addressing fundamental and applied topics.

Internationally, ULB engages in extensive collaboration with European and global partners. It participates in academic exchange programs such as Erasmus+, hosts visiting scholars, and maintains joint research ventures. Degrees are recognized within the framework of the French Community of Belgium, and instruction is primarily in French, with increasingly multilingual initiatives for international cooperation.

ULB is known for its history as a free, secular university and for its role as a major center of higher education and research in Brussels. It collaborates with public hospitals and other health institutions for medical education and health research, and maintains partnerships with universities around the world.
