Uffington

Uffington is a village and civil parish in Oxfordshire, England. It lies on the Berkshire Downs in the western part of the county, within the Vale of White Horse. The surrounding landscape is chalk downland and farmland, and the parish includes the small settlements nearby.

Uffington is best known for the Uffington White Horse, a prehistoric chalk figure on the hillside above the village. The figure is about 110 meters long and is commonly dated to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, roughly between 1000 and 300 BCE. It is created by removing the topsoil to reveal the lighter chalk beneath and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Nearby on White Horse Hill sits Uffington Castle, an Iron Age hill fort with extensive earthworks. The fort encloses a large area and provides evidence of early defensive and settlement activity in the region. Both the hill fort and the White Horse are important archaeological and cultural features of the downs.

The area is also associated with the Ridgeway, an ancient track that crosses the downs and is now designated as a National Trail. The landscape around Uffington attracts walkers, cyclists, and visitors interested in prehistoric and ancient history, as well as general rural tourism.
