UVlamput

UVlamput are devices that emit ultraviolet radiation for a range of industrial, medical and consumer applications. The term, used in Dutch and other languages, covers various lamp types that generate UV light, from traditional mercury-vapor and amalgam lamps to UV-C LEDs and specialized discharge lamps.

UV radiation is categorized into UV-A (315–400 nm), UV-B (280–315 nm) and UV-C (100–280 nm). Lamps vary in emission: low-pressure mercury lamps provide primarily UV-C at around 254 nm; medium-pressure lamps emit broad UV with higher intensity; UV-C LEDs deliver narrowband UV-C with fast switching; some designs use phosphor coatings to tailor spectra or create visible light.

Common uses include disinfection and sterilization of water, air and surfaces; curing of inks, coatings and dental resins; phototherapy for certain skin conditions; laboratory and medical equipment sterilization; and trace fluorescent assays in analytical chemistry.

UV exposure can damage skin and eyes, so UVlamput are typically used within enclosed systems or with shielding. Operators should wear protective eyewear and skin protection; note that some UV-C sources may produce ozone in ambient air. Lamps require proper ventilation and caution during handling and disposal due to mercury content.

In traditional designs, UVlamput consist of a gas-discharge tube with a quartz or hard-glass envelope, a ballast or driver, and, in some cases, a phosphor coating. Lifespan depends on technology and operating conditions, typically ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands of hours. Regular cleaning and periodic replacement are advised.

Because many UVlamput contain mercury, proper recycling and disposal are required. Used lamps should be collected through hazardous-waste channels or supplier take-back programs. Standards and guidelines for installation, operation and safety vary by country, but generally emphasize shielding, labeling, and maintenance procedures.
