USBCHDMI

USBCHDMI is a term used in discussions of connector integration to describe a unified USB-C based interface capable of carrying both USB data and power alongside HDMI multimedia signals over a single cable. It is not a formal standard published by the USB Implementers Forum. Instead, USBCHDMI refers to approaches that combine USB-C alternate modes (such as HDMI Alt Mode) with USB Power Delivery to deliver data, video, and power through one connection.

In practice, a USBCHDMI implementation would require compatible host controllers, cables, and displays that support the relevant alternate mode and negotiation protocols. Video would be transmitted as HDMI signals mapped onto USB-C lanes, while USB data would flow via USB 3.x/4 channels and power would be supplied by USB PD. The exact video resolution, color depth, and HDR capability depend on the HDMI version implemented and the bandwidth available through the USB-C link.

There is currently no universal USBCHDMI specification. Vendors have produced docks and adapters that multiplex USB and HDMI functions, but interoperability is often limited to product families. Real-world deployments emphasize the importance of certified cables and firmware compatibility to ensure reliable EDID exchange, hot-plug behavior, and audio return.

Potential benefits include reduced cable clutter and simplified docking for laptops, tablets, and mobile workstations. Limitations include shared bandwidth between video and USB data, potential latency, licensing or certification requirements, and varying support for high-resolution/refresh-rate HDMI outputs across devices.
