USAMO

USAMO stands for United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, a national high school mathematics competition that serves as the primary pathway to select the U.S. team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The competition is organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in collaboration with the U.S. National Team Selection Committee and state coordinators. Students typically qualify for USAMO through performance on the AMC competitions and further state-level selection processes.

The contest is held as a two-day event consisting of six proof-based problems; three are given on each day. The problems emphasize rigorous proofs and creative problem-solving more than computational speed. Solutions are written and scored by a panel of judges; each problem is worth one point, for a maximum possible score of six. Calculators are not allowed.

Winners and high scorers are invited to participate in a training camp and selection events to determine the U.S. IMO team. The best performers are named to the U.S. team to compete at the IMO, while others may receive recognition or reserve status for future years.

The USAMO has its roots in the broader American math-olympiad program, which aims to promote mathematical problem solving and prepare students for international competition. It has produced numerous participants who later achieved recognition in mathematics and related fields.
