UPSy

UPSy, short for Unified Personal System, is an open-source software framework designed to manage and synchronize personal data across devices and services while prioritizing privacy. It provides a modular platform where users can define data policies, control access, and export data in portable formats. Since its initial release, UPSy has been developed by a community of researchers and volunteers, operating under an open governance model.

The architecture centers on a lightweight Core that handles identity, policy evaluation, and data versioning. Complementary components include a Data Store for encrypted local storage, a Policy Engine for access rules, and Connectors to various applications and devices. A plug-in mechanism allows third-party modules to extend functionality, such as data synchronization, encryption, or analytics, without modifying the core code. Communications can be configured to run locally, on trusted servers, or in hybrid setups, with end-to-end encryption and optional zero-knowledge features.

Key features include privacy-by-design, data minimization, granular access controls, audit logging, and portable data export. UPSy emphasizes data sovereignty, giving users control over where data resides and how it is processed. It supports offline operation and selective syncing to reduce exposure.
