Tölvutomógrafía, often referred to as CT scanning or CAT scanning, is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images of the body. These images, also known as slices, provide detailed views of internal organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. The process involves a patient lying on a table that moves through a ring-shaped machine containing an X-ray source and detectors. As the X-ray beam rotates around the patient, it captures multiple images from different angles. A computer then processes this data, reconstructing it into cross-sectional images. This allows for a more comprehensive view than traditional X-rays, which are two-dimensional. CT scans are used for a wide range of diagnostic purposes, including detecting tumors, evaluating injuries, identifying internal bleeding, and guiding medical procedures. The procedure is generally painless, though some patients may experience claustrophobia in the scanner. Contrast agents, which are substances that enhance the visibility of certain tissues or blood vessels, are sometimes administered intravenously or orally to improve the diagnostic quality of the images. The radiation dose from a CT scan is higher than from a standard X-ray, but the benefits in diagnosing serious conditions often outweigh the risks.
