Térdprotézisek, also known as knee replacements, are prosthetic devices used to replace damaged knee joints. They are commonly used to treat severe osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions that cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the knee. The procedure involves surgically removing the damaged parts of the knee joint and replacing them with artificial components, typically made of metal alloys, plastic, and polymers.

There are two main types of knee replacement surgeries: total knee replacement and partial knee replacement. In a total knee replacement, all three compartments of the knee joint (femoral, tibial, and patellofemoral) are replaced. A partial knee replacement, also known as a unicompartmental knee replacement, only replaces one or two of these compartments, usually when the damage is confined to a specific area of the knee.

The decision to undergo knee replacement surgery is typically made after non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy, medication, and injections, have failed to provide adequate relief. The surgery aims to reduce pain, improve function, and restore the quality of life for individuals with severe knee joint damage. Recovery involves a period of rehabilitation, including physical therapy, to regain strength, flexibility, and mobility. While generally successful, potential risks and complications can include infection, blood clots, and implant loosening.
