Tændingsindstillingen refers to the timing of the spark plug's ignition relative to the piston's position in an internal combustion engine. This crucial timing determines when the air-fuel mixture is ignited within the cylinder. In gasoline engines, the spark plug ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture. The optimal moment for ignition is slightly before the piston reaches the top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. This precise timing allows the expanding gases from combustion to exert maximum force on the piston as it begins its downward stroke, maximizing power output and efficiency.

Incorrect ignition timing can lead to several problems. If the spark occurs too late (retarded timing), the combustion process may not be fully completed by the time the exhaust valve opens, resulting in reduced power, poor fuel economy, and increased exhaust temperatures. This can cause knocking or pinging sounds, potential engine damage, and reduced efficiency.
