Tähemärk

Tähemärk is an Estonian term that translates to "star sign" or "celestial sign." It is primarily associated with astrology and the concept of zodiac signs. In popular culture and everyday conversation in Estonia, tähemärk refers to the twelve divisions of the ecliptic, each associated with a specific constellation. These signs are believed to influence an individual's personality, destiny, and relationships based on their birth date.

The twelve tähemärki are Aries (Jäär), Taurus (Sõnn), Gemini (Kaksikud), Cancer (Vähk), Leo (Lõvi), Virgo (Neitsi), Libra (Kaalud), Scorpio (Skorpion), Sagittarius (Ambur), Capricorn (Kaljukits), Aquarius (Veevalaja), and Pisces (Kalad). Each sign is linked to a particular period of the year, and individuals born within that period are said to belong to that specific tähemärk. Astrologers use these signs, along with the positions of other celestial bodies at the time of birth, to create horoscopes and provide interpretations.

While widely recognized and discussed, the concept of tähemärgid is rooted in astrological beliefs and is not supported by scientific evidence. Nevertheless, it remains a popular topic of conversation and interest for many in Estonia, often used for self-reflection or as a lighthearted way to understand oneself and others. The term can also sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any celestial symbol or omen, though its primary association is with the zodiac.
