Távirányítókat, commonly referred to as remote controls, are electronic devices used to operate other devices wirelessly from a distance. These devices are ubiquitous in modern households and are most famously associated with controlling televisions, but their applications extend to a wide range of electronics including audio-visual equipment, smart home devices, drones, and even some industrial machinery.

The basic principle behind most remote controls involves emitting an infrared (IR) signal or a radio frequency (RF) signal. Infrared remotes require a direct line of sight to the device they are controlling, as the IR beam is easily obstructed. Radio frequency remotes, on the other hand, can operate through walls and other obstacles, offering greater flexibility. The signals transmitted contain specific codes that correspond to different commands, such as power on/off, volume adjustment, channel selection, or menu navigation.

Early remote controls were often complex and had numerous buttons, leading to user confusion. Over time, designs have become more streamlined and intuitive, with many modern remotes featuring fewer buttons and integrating voice control capabilities. The development of smartphone apps that can function as remote controls has also become increasingly popular, consolidating multiple remotes into a single, familiar device.
