Työsyrjintää

Työsyrjintää is the Finnish term for workplace discrimination. It refers to unfair treatment of an employee or job applicant based on personal characteristics that are irrelevant to their ability to perform the job. Finnish law prohibits discrimination on several grounds, including age, ethnic origin, nationality, language, religion, belief, disability, sexual orientation, and other personal reasons.

Discrimination can occur in various aspects of employment, such as recruitment and hiring, job assignments, training opportunities, promotions, pay, and termination. For example, refusing to hire someone because of their age, paying a woman less than a man for the same work, or denying training opportunities to an employee based on their ethnic background are all considered forms of työsyrjintää.

The Finnish Employment Contracts Act and the Non-Discrimination Act provide the legal framework to prevent and address työsyrjintää. Employers have a responsibility to ensure a discrimination-free work environment and to take action if discrimination occurs. Employees who believe they have been subjected to työsyrjintää have the right to seek redress. This can involve reporting the issue to their employer, seeking assistance from a shop steward or union representative, or pursuing legal action. The aim is to ensure equal opportunities and fair treatment for all individuals in the workplace.
