Tyyppikäsite

Tyyppikäsite, often translated as "type concept" or "ideal type," is a sociological tool developed by Max Weber. It is not a description of reality as it is, nor is it a moral ideal. Instead, it is a conceptual construct, an analytical tool that sociologists use to understand and analyze complex social phenomena.

A tyyppikäsite is formed by exaggerating certain characteristics of a social phenomenon and weaving them into a logically coherent picture. This exaggeration is deliberate and serves to highlight the essential features of the phenomenon. For example, Weber's "bureaucracy" is a tyyppikäsite, characterized by hierarchy, specialization, formal rules, and impersonality. No real-world bureaucracy perfectly embodies all these traits, but the concept helps us compare and contrast actual organizations.
