Twelvephase

Twelvephase refers to a type of electrical power generation or distribution system that utilizes twelve alternating current (AC) phases. In a typical AC system, power is delivered in phases, meaning the voltage and current oscillate in a sinusoidal pattern. These phases are usually separated by specific time intervals. A standard three-phase system, for example, has three phases offset by 120 electrical degrees.

In a twelvephase system, twelve such sinusoidal waveforms are present. These waveforms are evenly distributed in time, meaning each phase is offset by 30 electrical degrees from the previous one (360 degrees / 12 phases = 30 degrees). This arrangement results in a smoother and more continuous power delivery compared to systems with fewer phases.

The primary advantage of a twelvephase system is its ability to reduce voltage ripple and torque ripple when used with rectification or in motor applications. This leads to more efficient operation and less mechanical vibration. Twelvephase systems are often employed in high-power industrial applications, particularly those involving large electric motors or sensitive electronic equipment where smooth power is critical. They can be achieved through specialized generators or by combining multiple three-phase outputs. The complexity of generation and distribution is a trade-off for the enhanced performance.
