Tvärsektoriella

Tvärsektoriella is a term used mainly in Swedish public policy and research to describe approaches that cross traditional sector boundaries to address problems that span multiple sectors. The core idea is that complex societal challenges—such as health, climate, housing, and mobility—cannot be solved by a single sector alone, but require coordinated action across government ministries, private firms, and civil society organizations.

Etymology: tvär means "across" in Swedish, sektor- means "sector", and -iell is a common suffix meaning "relating to". In practice, tvärsektoriella work is organized through joint programs, cross-sectoral steering bodies, integrated budgeting, common performance indicators, and formal or informal data-sharing arrangements. Methods often include co-design with stakeholders, systems thinking, and transdisciplinary research that combines knowledge from multiple disciplines and sectors.

Applications are common in policy areas like public health, environmental policy, urban development, and sustainable mobility, as well as in national strategies and municipal planning. The approach aligns with international concepts such as integrated policy and cross-sector collaboration, and is central to achieving holistic outcomes and more resilient governance.
