Tuulilasinpyyhkijät, often referred to as windshield wipers, are essential components of a vehicle's safety system. They are mechanical devices designed to remove rain, snow, and debris from the windshield, ensuring clear visibility for the driver. The system typically consists of one or more arms, each fitted with a rubber blade. These arms are powered by an electric motor, which moves them back and forth across the glass in a synchronized motion.

The operation of the windshield wipers is controlled by a switch, usually located on the steering column or dashboard. This switch allows the driver to select different speeds or intermittent settings for the wipers. Intermittent settings are particularly useful in light rain, providing occasional wiping to maintain visibility without constant operation. Many modern vehicles also feature automatic windshield wipers that use rain sensors to detect moisture on the windshield and activate the wipers accordingly.

The rubber blades are the part of the wiper that makes direct contact with the glass. Over time, these blades can degrade due to exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, and wear. Worn-out blades can become stiff, cracked, or torn, leading to streaking and reduced cleaning effectiveness. It is recommended to inspect and replace wiper blades regularly, typically every six to twelve months, to ensure optimal performance and driver safety. In colder climates, winter wiper blades are available, featuring a rubber coating to prevent ice buildup and maintain flexibility in freezing temperatures.
