Tuulepuhverdus

Tuulepuhverdus refers to the phenomenon of wind buffering or a reduction in wind speed caused by an obstacle. This can occur naturally or be intentionally created. Natural tuulepuhverdus is observed when wind encounters features like hills, forests, or buildings. The air pressure increases on the windward side of the obstacle, slowing the wind down, and then decreases on the leeward side, creating a turbulent wake.

Intentionally created tuulepuhverdus is commonly known as windbreaks or shelterbelts. These are rows of trees, shrubs, or other structures planted to protect an area from strong winds. They are widely used in agriculture to prevent soil erosion, reduce damage to crops, and improve the microclimate for livestock. In urban environments, windbreaks can be incorporated into landscape design to create more comfortable pedestrian areas or to reduce wind tunnel effects between tall buildings. The effectiveness of tuulepuhverdus depends on the density, height, and width of the barrier, as well as the prevailing wind conditions. A dense barrier will create a sharp reduction in wind speed close to it, but a more turbulent wake further away. Less dense barriers allow some wind to pass through, creating a more gradual reduction in speed over a larger area, which can be more beneficial in some applications.
