Turci

Turci is a term used in several languages to refer to the Turkish people, especially the citizens of the Republic of Turkey and ethnic Turks. In historical contexts, it can also denote the populations of the Ottoman Empire. The term is analogous to the English "Turks" and is commonly found in encyclopedic and historical writing.

Etymology and language

The term Turci is derived from the Turkish word Türkler. The Turkish language is a Turkic language of the Oghuz subgroup, part of the larger Turkic language family that spans parts of Eurasia. Turkish uses the Latin alphabet, a reform implemented in 1928 as part of Atatürk’s modernization program. The broader concept of Turkic peoples includes various communities across Central Asia, the Caucasus, and beyond.

History

Turkic peoples originated in Central Asia and gradually migrated westward over the centuries. The Seljuk Turks established a medieval state in Anatolia, paving the way for Turkish influence in the region. The Ottoman Empire, founded in the late 13th century, expanded across Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, and persisted until the early 20th century. Following World War I, the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed in 1923, and its founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, launched extensive reforms aimed at secularism, modernization, and nationalism.

Today, Turkey is the core homeland for Turkish-speaking populations, with a large and growing diaspora in Europe and other regions. Significant Turkish communities are present in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and beyond. Turkish culture encompasses literature, music, cuisine, art, and architecture, and the religious landscape is predominantly Muslim, with Sunni and Alevi communities among others. Turkish identity in the modern state blends historical heritage with secular republican and national elements.
