Turkish-speaking refers to people who use Turkish as their primary language for daily communication or who belong to communities where Turkish is a dominant language. Turkish belongs to the Turkic language family and is most widely spoken in Turkey, where it is the official language, and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where it is also official.

Outside Turkey, Turkish is spoken by large immigrant and minority communities in Europe and parts of the Middle East. The largest population of Turkish speakers outside Turkey lives in Germany, with sizable communities in Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, and the United Kingdom. Smaller Turkish-speaking communities exist in Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Iraq, and Syria, often as ethnic minorities or linguistic communities within multilingual settings.

Standard Turkish is based largely on the Istanbul dialect and serves as the national norm for education, media, government, and publishing in Turkey. The language uses a Latin-based alphabet, adopted in 1928 as part of Atatürk’s reforms, replacing the Ottoman Turkish script. Turkish is an agglutinative language with vowel harmony, enabling extensive word-building through affixes.

Dialects and variation occur across Turkey and among Turkish-speaking communities abroad. While regional varieties exist, Standard Turkish provides mutual intelligibility for most speakers. Turkish culture, literature, and media—alongside education in Turkish—support language maintenance among diaspora communities, though levels of language transmission can vary by country, generation, and community support.
