Turbidityenheter are units used to measure the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid, most commonly water. Turbidity is caused by the presence of suspended particles, such as sediment, silt, clay, algae, and other organic or inorganic matter. The degree of turbidity affects the transparency of the fluid.

Several different units are used to express turbidity, each based on different measurement standards and reference materials. The most common units include Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), Formazin Nephelometric Units (FNU), and Jackson Turbidity Units (JTU). NTU and FNU are largely interchangeable and are derived from nephelometric measurements, which scatter light at a 90-degree angle. This method is generally preferred for its sensitivity. JTU, on the other hand, is based on the Jackson turbidimeter, which measures light transmittance and is less sensitive, particularly at lower turbidity levels.

The choice of turbidity unit often depends on the specific application and the instrumentation used. For instance, NTU is widely adopted in environmental monitoring and water treatment processes due to its accuracy and ease of use with modern nephelometers. Understanding turbidity and its measurement is crucial for assessing water quality, as high turbidity can indicate pollution, affect aquatic life by reducing light penetration, and interfere with disinfection processes.
