Tuliperäinen is a Finnish term that translates to "fire-derived" or "originating from fire." It is most commonly used in a geological context to describe rocks and minerals that have formed through igneous processes. These are rocks that were once molten, either as magma beneath the Earth's surface or as lava erupted from volcanoes, and then cooled and solidified.

The process of igneous rock formation involves the melting of pre-existing rock material. This molten material, known as magma when underground and lava when on the surface, contains various elements and compounds. As it cools, these elements begin to crystallize and arrange themselves into specific mineral structures. The rate of cooling significantly influences the size of the crystals. Basalt, common in oceanic crust and volcanic flows, is typically formed from faster-cooling lava. Obsidian, a volcanic glass, is the result of extremely rapid cooling.
