Tulenkäynnistystavat, meaning "fire-starting methods" in Finnish, refers to the various techniques and tools used to initiate a fire. Historically, humans have developed a wide array of methods to create fire, essential for warmth, cooking, and protection.

One of the earliest and most fundamental methods involves friction. Techniques like the bow drill, hand drill, and fire plow utilize the friction generated by rubbing wood against wood to create an ember. These methods require specific types of wood and considerable practice to master. Another ancient method is the percussion method, where striking certain rocks, such as flint and pyrite or quartz and steel, produces sparks that can ignite tinder.

Modern fire-starting relies on more readily available tools. Matches, invented in the 19th century, were a significant advancement, offering a convenient and quick way to produce flame. Disposable lighters, utilizing a spark mechanism and a flammable fuel like butane, became ubiquitous for their ease of use and portability. Ferrocerium rods, often called "ferro rods," are a more durable and reliable alternative to matches, producing hot sparks even when wet. These are commonly found in survival kits.

The success of any fire-starting method depends on having suitable tinder, which is a material that ignites easily from a spark or ember. Examples include dry grass, cotton balls, birch bark shavings, and commercially produced fire starters. The choice of method often depends on the available resources, environmental conditions, and the user's skill level.
