Tsumago

Tsumago is a beautifully preserved post town located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was a vital stop along the Nakasendo trail, one of the five major highways of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. During that era, samurai, merchants, and other travelers would rest and resupply in Tsumago before continuing their journeys.

What makes Tsumago particularly special is its commitment to historical preservation. In the mid-20th century, the town actively worked to restore its Edo-period appearance. Buildings were reconstructed or renovated to resemble their original designs, and modern intrusions like electricity poles and overhead wires were removed and placed underground. Cars are also largely restricted from entering the main street during daylight hours, contributing to an authentic atmosphere.

Walking through Tsumago feels like stepping back in time. The narrow streets are lined with traditional wooden buildings, many of which now house charming inns (minshuku), souvenir shops, and small museums detailing the town's history and the lives of its former residents. The main street, known as the Honjin-dori, is particularly picturesque. Visitors can experience a section of the original Nakasendo trail by hiking from Tsumago to the neighboring post town of Magome, a popular and scenic route that showcases the region's natural beauty. The peaceful ambiance and historical significance of Tsumago draw many tourists seeking a glimpse into Japan's past.
