Tsiviilõigusel, or civil law, is a branch of law that governs private relationships between individuals and entities. Unlike criminal law, which deals with offenses against the state, civil law focuses on disputes between private parties and aims to resolve these conflicts through legal remedies such as monetary compensation or injunctions.

The core principles of civil law emphasize individual rights and responsibilities. Contract law, for instance, governs agreements between parties and ensures that promises are upheld. Property law defines ownership rights and how property can be acquired, used, and transferred. Family law addresses issues such as marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance. Tort law deals with civil wrongs that cause harm to others, such as negligence or defamation, providing a means for the injured party to seek redress.

Civil law systems are characterized by codified statutes that form the primary source of law. Judges interpret and apply these codes to specific cases, and their decisions often build upon previous rulings, though not to the same extent as in common law systems. The goal of civil law is to provide a predictable and just framework for private interactions, ensuring fairness and order in society.
