Tsitsikamma

Tsitsikamma is a coastal region located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. The name "Tsitsikamma" is derived from the Xhosa words *tsitsi* (meaning "bushman") and *kamma* (meaning "river"), collectively translating to "river of the bushman." The area is part of the larger Garden Route, a scenic coastal drive that stretches from Mossel Bay to Knysna.

The Tsitsikamma region is primarily known for its lush forests, rugged cliffs, and pristine beaches, which are protected within the Tsitsikamma National Park. Established in 1964, the park spans approximately 200 square kilometers and is a key component of the Garden Route National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The park’s landscapes include the famous Storms River Mouth, where the Storms River meets the Indian Ocean, and the Plettenberg Bay, a popular coastal destination.

The area is also home to rich biodiversity, including endangered species such as the Cape mountain zebra and various bird species.
