Trás-os-Montes is a historical and geographic region in the northeast of Portugal. It lies largely within the Norte region and includes portions of the Bragança and Vila Real districts. The region is commonly divided into Alto Trás-os-Montes (Upper Trás-os-Montes) and Baixo Trás-os-Montes (Lower Trás-os-Montes).

Trás-os-Montes features rugged, mountainous terrain with granite massifs and extensive plateaus. The Montesinho mountain range and Montesinho Natural Park are notable in the northern part. The Douro and Sabor rivers carve deep valleys and terraced landscapes. The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, and rainfall varying by altitude.

The region hosts strong traditional communities with distinctive customs, gastronomy, and crafts. In Miranda do Douro and surrounding areas, the Mirandese language is spoken and has official recognition as a regional language.

Economy centers on agriculture and livestock, including cereals, olives, and sheep and cattle farming, complemented by forestry and small industries. The Douro valley portion contributes to wine production and related agro-tourism.

Historically remote and sparsely populated, Trás-os-Montes has experienced significant emigration, influencing its demographic profile. In recent decades it has attracted nature and rural tourism, highlighting protected landscapes such as Montesinho and traditional rural life.
