Trykkpåler

Trykkpåler are piles used in civil engineering to transfer vertical loads from a structure into deeper, more stable soils or bedrock. The term is used in Norwegian practice to describe piles designed primarily to bear compression loads, though in some contexts they function as end-bearing or friction piles depending on soil conditions. They are a fundamental component of pile foundation systems, employed when shallow foundations are unsuitable due to weak or variable subsoil, large loads, or limited bearing capacity at shallow depths.

Materials and forms vary. Commonly used materials include reinforced concrete, steel, and timber. Trykkpåler can be installed as driven piles, which are hammered or vibrated into the ground, or as drilled (bored) piles that are excavated or drilled and then filled with concrete and rebar. In some designs piles may be grouted or otherwise reinforced to achieve higher capacities.

Load transfer occurs primarily through end bearing at the pile tip, skin friction along the shaft, or a combination of both. The design process considers soil properties, pile diameter and length, load magnitude, and required settlement performance. Installation methods and soil interactions influence capacity, vibration, noise, and potential ground displacement.

Applications include building foundations, bridges, and other structures where shallow foundations are not feasible. Trykkpåler can be used in urban areas, near existing structures, or in offshore and coastal environments. After installation, piles may undergo integrity testing and load testing to confirm capacity and condition.
