Troponiinimääritys is a laboratory test used to measure the level of troponin in the blood. Troponin is a protein found in cardiac muscle cells and, to a lesser extent, in skeletal muscle. When heart muscle is damaged, troponin is released into the bloodstream. This makes troponin a key biomarker for diagnosing heart attacks, also known as myocardial infarction.

The test is typically performed on a blood sample drawn from a vein. Elevated levels of troponin in the blood indicate that damage has occurred to the heart muscle. The severity of the heart attack can sometimes be correlated with the magnitude of the troponin elevation, although this is not always straightforward.

There are different types of troponin assays, including troponin I and troponin T. Both are highly specific for cardiac muscle and are widely used in clinical practice. The timing of the blood draw is crucial for accurate interpretation. Troponin levels may be normal immediately after the onset of chest pain but rise over several hours. Besides heart attacks, other conditions can cause a slight elevation in troponin levels, such as severe infections, kidney disease, or strenuous exercise. However, the levels seen in these conditions are generally much lower than those associated with a heart attack.
