Tromboplaat

Tromboplaat is a term sometimes used informally to refer to thrombocytes, which are more commonly known as platelets. Platelets are tiny, irregular-shaped cell fragments that circulate in the blood of mammals. They play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding.

When a blood vessel is injured, platelets are activated. They adhere to the site of injury, aggregate together to form a plug, and release various factors that promote blood clotting. This process, known as platelet aggregation, is essential for preventing excessive blood loss and is a vital part of wound healing.

Platelets are produced in the bone marrow from large precursor cells called megakaryocytes. A normal platelet count in humans typically ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Abnormalities in platelet number or function can lead to bleeding disorders or an increased risk of blood clots.

Conditions affecting platelet count include thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, which can be caused by various factors such as autoimmune diseases, infections, or certain medications. Conversely, thrombocytosis, a high platelet count, can be associated with inflammation, infection, or certain types of cancer. While "tromboplaat" is not a standard scientific term, it clearly relates to the function and significance of platelets in the circulatory system.
