Trombolüüsiks

Trombolüüsiks, also known as thrombolysis, is a medical treatment that uses drugs to break up blood clots. These clots can block blood flow to vital organs such as the heart or brain, leading to conditions like heart attack or stroke. The process involves administering clot-busting medications, often referred to as thrombolytics, directly into the bloodstream. These drugs work by activating a substance in the body called plasminogen, which then converts into plasmin. Plasmin is an enzyme that can dissolve fibrin, the main protein component of blood clots.

The effectiveness of trombolüüsiks depends heavily on the timing of administration. In cases of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and ischemic stroke (stroke caused by a clot), prompt treatment is crucial for minimizing damage to the affected tissue. Thrombolytic therapy is typically administered intravenously, and the specific drug and dosage are determined by the patient's condition and medical history. While highly beneficial, trombolüüsiks also carries risks, primarily bleeding complications. Therefore, it is only administered by trained medical professionals in controlled environments. Other treatments, such as mechanical thrombectomy, may be used in conjunction with or as an alternative to thrombolysis for certain types of clots.
