Trombinowy

Trombinowy is an adjective in Polish used to describe anything related to thrombin, the enzyme central to the blood coagulation cascade. It is formed from the noun trombina (thrombin) with the adjectival suffix -owy, and appears in scientific, medical, and biotechnological language to label materials, reagents, tests, or procedures involving thrombin.

In biology, thrombin is a serine protease produced by proteolytic activation of prothrombin. It catalyzes the conversion of soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin strands, initiating clot formation. Thrombin also activates platelets and amplifies the coagulation cascade by modifying factors V, VIII, and XI. Its activity depends on calcium ions and on phospholipid surfaces provided by activated platelets.

In clinical and industrial contexts, the term trombinowy appears in references to thrombin-based products and assays. Thrombin-based fibrin sealants or glues (often described as trombinowy żel) combine thrombin with fibrinogen to produce a rapid hemostatic clot used in surgery and tissue sealing. The thrombin time (czas trombinowy) is a laboratory test that measures the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin after adding thrombin, providing information about fibrinogen level and functionality and the presence of inhibitors.

Sources of thrombin include human plasma, bovine plasma, and recombinant forms. Recombinant thrombin reduces safety concerns associated with animal-derived materials, while plasma-derived thrombin requires screening for pathogens.
