Trochophores

Trochophores are a type of larval stage found in many invertebrate animals, including annelids, mollusks, and echinoderms. The term "trochophore" is derived from the Greek words "trochē," meaning wheel, and "phoros," meaning bearer. This refers to the distinctive wheel-like arrangement of the cilia on the larva's body.

In the trochophore stage, the larva is characterized by a distinct body plan that includes a ring of cilia around its body. These cilia are used for swimming and feeding. The cilia beat in a coordinated manner to create a flowing motion, allowing the larva to move through the water and capture food particles.

Trochophores are typically bilaterally symmetrical, with a distinct head, mantle, and tail. They often have a rudimentary nervous system and may possess rudimentary eyes and a mouth. The larval stage is usually non-feeding, with the larva relying on stored energy reserves for growth and development.

As the larva grows and develops, it undergoes a series of metamorphic transformations, eventually giving rise to the adult form. In some species, the larval stage is brief and the individual rapidly transforms into the adult form. In other species, the larval stage may last for several days or even weeks.
