Tripolyfaatit

Tripolyfaatit, also known as sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), are inorganic compounds with the chemical formula Na5P3O10. They are the sodium salts of the pentapolyphosphate anion. Tripolyfaatit are white crystalline powders that are readily soluble in water. They are widely used in various industrial and consumer applications due to their remarkable properties as a chelating agent, emulsifier, and preservative.

One of the primary applications of tripolyfaatit is in detergents. They act as builders, enhancing the cleaning power of surfactants by sequestering hard water ions like calcium and magnesium. This prevents these ions from interfering with the detergent's ability to remove dirt and grease. In food processing, tripolyfaatit are used as preservatives, emulsifiers, and moisture retainers. They are commonly found in processed meats, seafood, and dairy products. In these applications, they help maintain texture, improve shelf life, and prevent spoilage.

Tripolyfaatit also find use in water treatment, where they help to prevent scale formation and corrosion. In ceramics, they are used as deflocculants, reducing the viscosity of clay slurries and making them easier to process. While generally considered safe for their intended uses, concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impact of large-scale phosphate use, particularly in relation to eutrophication of water bodies. Consequently, regulations in some regions have led to a reduction in their use in certain products, such as household detergents.
