Trimetaphosphate

Trimetaphosphate is a cyclic metaphosphate consisting of three phosphorus-oxygen units linked in a ring. In its most common forms it is encountered as salts such as sodium trimetaphosphate Na3[P3O9] and potassium trimetaphosphate K3[P3O9], where the anion is [P3O9]3−. The molecule contains three P(V) centers and a nine-oxygen ring connected by three P–O–P bridges.

In structure, trimetaphosphate is a compact cyclic trimer of phosphate units. The ring geometry gives a relatively high lattice stability in the solid salts, which are typically soluble in water. It is produced commercially by condensation of orthophosphate derivatives under dehydrating conditions, or by routes that generate the cyclic metaphosphate ring. The salts are generally colorless solids or powders.

Chemical properties include hydrolysis in aqueous media, with rate dependent on pH and temperature. Under acidic conditions, trimetaphosphate progressively hydrolyzes to orthophosphate species; in neutral to basic solutions it can remain relatively stable for extended periods. As a reagent, it can act as a phosphorylating agent, transferring phosphate units to nucleophiles such as alcohols and amines to form phosphate esters under suitable conditions. This reactivity makes trimetaphosphate useful in certain areas of phosphate chemistry and synthesis.

Applications of trimetaphosphate include use as a sequestrant for metal ions in water treatment and as a multifunctional additive in food processing in some regions. It has also been explored in dental care research for potential remineralization and anti-caries effects. Handling and disposal follow general chemical-reagent guidelines, with attention to its hydrolytic behavior and environmental fate.
