Triligand

Triligand is a term used in coordination chemistry to describe a ligand that provides three donor sites for binding to a metal center, or a single molecule designed to engage three coordination sites simultaneously. In many contexts the standard term is tridentate ligand, and triligand is encountered mainly as an informal or historical descriptor. The concept is central to chelation chemistry, where multi-dentate ligands stabilize metal complexes and influence geometry, kinetics, and reactivity.

Most trilingands present three heteroatoms or three tail arms arranged to converge on a metal center. Donor atoms are typically nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur, and the spatial arrangement—whether meridional, facial, or tripodal—controls bite angles and chelate stability. Tripodal versions feature a central scaffold bearing three pendant donors that can wrap around a metal or bridge to adjacent metals, enabling polynuclear assemblies.

Well-known triligand examples include terpyridine, a classic tridentate ligand coordinating through three pyridyl nitrogens, and tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA), a tripodal ligand with three pyridyl donors. Other triligands are designed by linking three coordinating units to a central platform, creating rigid or flexible three-point binding motifs used in catalysis and materials chemistry.

In applications, triligands and related tridentate systems are employed to tune the electronic environment of metal centers, influence selectivity in catalysis, enable light-harvesting assemblies, and construct metal-organic frameworks and supramolecular architectures. Because the term is variably used, references often prefer tridentate ligand for clarity.
