Trikoscopy is a specialized field within dermatology and trichology that focuses on the microscopic examination of hair and the scalp. Its primary purpose is to diagnose and monitor a variety of hair and scalp conditions, ranging from common hair loss to more complex dermatological issues.

The process of trikoscopy typically involves the use of a dermatoscope, a handheld magnifying device that can be equipped with illumination. This allows for a detailed, in-situ examination of the hair follicles, hair shaft, and the surrounding skin of the scalp. Magnification levels can vary, but often range from 10x to 40x, revealing structures and patterns not visible to the naked eye.
