Trihulls

Trihulls are a type of boat hull design characterized by the use of three distinct hull sections. Typically, this involves a central, main hull and two smaller, outrigger hulls, often referred to as "amas." This configuration is a variation of the multihull principle, distinct from catamarans (two hulls) and trimarans (which also feature a central hull and amas but often imply a more integrated and sometimes performance-oriented design). The trihull design aims to combine some of the advantages of monohulls and multihulls.

The primary benefit of a trihull is its stability. The wide stance provided by the amas significantly reduces the risk of capsizing compared to a monohull, especially in rough water. This increased stability can lead to a more comfortable ride and a larger, more usable deck space, as the need for ballast is largely eliminated. Furthermore, the outrigger hulls can contribute to reduced drag and increased speed, particularly at higher velocities, by lifting the main hull partially out of the water.

However, trihulls also present certain drawbacks. The three-hull structure can increase complexity in construction and maintenance. Maneuverability in tight spaces, such as marinas, can be more challenging due to the wider beam. In some designs, the weight distribution and hydrodynamics can lead to less efficient operation at lower speeds compared to monohulls. Trihulls are less common than monohulls, catamarans, or trimarans, often found in specific applications where their unique stability and deck space characteristics are prioritized, such as certain types of workboats, barges, or specialized recreational craft.
