Trapets

Trapets is a term used in several languages to denote the quadrilateral commonly known in English as a trapezoid (or trapezium in British usage). The defining feature is that at least one pair of opposite sides is parallel, called the bases. In math education, trapets is used to refer to this class of shapes and to discuss their properties, measurements, and applications.

Definition and basic properties: A trapets has two parallel sides, the bases, and two non-parallel sides called the legs. The distance between the bases is the height. The area is computed as A = (b1 + b2) × h / 2, where b1 and b2 are the lengths of the bases and h is the height. A midline (or midsegment) connects the midpoints of the legs and has length equal to the average of the bases: m = (b1 + b2) / 2. The base angles are the angles formed by the bases with the legs.

Variants and notable facts: If the non-parallel sides are equal in length, the trapets is isosceles, which implies equal base angles and diagonals of equal length. If one leg is perpendicular to the bases, it is a right trapets. Some definitions distinguish trapets (at least one pair of parallel sides) from parallelograms (two pairs of parallel sides), while others use different naming conventions in different languages.

Construction and applications: Trapets arise in geometry problems, architectural design, and engineering sketches wherever a quadrilateral with a pair of parallel sides is required. In coordinate geometry, placing the bases on horizontal lines allows straightforward calculation of base lengths, height, and diagonal distances.
