Tozal

Tozal is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C14H20O2. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature with a characteristic odor. The compound is a diester derived from phthalic acid and isopropanol. Tozal is primarily used as a plasticizer, a substance added to polymers to increase their flexibility, workability, and stretchability. It is particularly effective in softening polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is commonly found in products such as vinyl flooring, cables, and synthetic leather.

The production of Tozal involves the esterification of phthalic anhydride with isopropanol in the presence of an acid catalyst. This process yields Tozal along with water as a byproduct. The resulting compound is then purified through distillation. Tozal's effectiveness as a plasticizer stems from its ability to intercalate between polymer chains, reducing intermolecular forces and thus lowering the glass transition temperature of the material.

While Tozal has been widely used due to its cost-effectiveness and performance, there have been some environmental and health considerations. Like many phthalate esters, concerns have been raised regarding its potential as an endocrine disruptor. Regulatory bodies in various regions have established limits on its use in certain consumer products, particularly those intended for children or with direct food contact.
