Totalreflektert

Totalreflektert is a term used in some Nordic-language discourses to describe a mode of reflection characterized by its totality and depth. It denotes an approach that seeks to scrutinize not only one’s beliefs but also the sources of those beliefs, including social position, power relations, and methodological assumptions. In practice, to be totalreflektert is to engage in sustained, transparent self-examination that informs analysis, decision-making, and communication.

Etymologically a compound of total and reflektert (reflected), the term appears in contemporary philosophy, pedagogy, and qualitative research in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish-speaking contexts as a descriptive ideal rather than a standard psychological trait. It is typically not used as a label for individuals but as a quality of inquiry or discourse: a researcher, student, or journalist may strive to be totalreflektert by bridging theory and experience and by inviting critique from others.

Core characteristics include self-scrutiny of biases, explicit acknowledgment of limitations, alignment of claims with evidence, and a willingness to revise positions in light of new arguments or counterexamples. Critics warn that the ideal can be burdensome or vague, potentially conflating rigorous reflexivity with exhaustive self-doubt.
