Torsjonsprøver

Torsjonsprøver, also known as torsion tests, are mechanical tests used to determine a material's resistance to twisting forces. During a torsion test, a specimen, typically a cylindrical rod or tube, is subjected to a torque, causing it to twist along its longitudinal axis. The applied torque and the resulting angle of twist are measured and recorded.

The primary purpose of a torsion test is to evaluate a material's shear strength, shear modulus, and ductility under torsional loading. Shear strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand before permanent deformation or fracture occurs due to shear forces. The shear modulus, also known as the modulus of rigidity, quantifies a material's stiffness in response to shear stress. Ductility, in the context of torsion, refers to the material's ability to deform significantly before fracturing.

Data obtained from torsion tests can be plotted as a torque-twist angle curve. This curve provides valuable insights into the material's behavior, including its elastic limit, yield point, and ultimate torque. These properties are crucial for designing components subjected to torsional loads, such as shafts, axles, and drive systems. Different standards and specimen geometries exist for conducting torsion tests, ensuring consistency and comparability of results across various materials and laboratories.
