It quantifies how much torque is required to produce a specific angle of twist. A higher torsional stiffness indicates that a larger torque is needed to achieve the same amount of twist, meaning the material or structure is more rigid in torsion.

This property is crucial in engineering design, particularly for components subjected to twisting loads, such as drive shafts, axles, and torsion bars. The calculation of torsional stiffness often involves material properties like the shear modulus and geometric properties of the object, such as its cross-sectional shape and length. For a solid circular shaft, torsional stiffness is directly proportional to the shear modulus of the material and the polar moment of inertia of its cross-section, and inversely proportional to its length.
