Torsionsmotstånd, often translated as torsional resistance or torque resistance, refers to the ability of an object or material to withstand twisting forces. When a torque is applied to an object, it induces shear stresses within the material. Torsionsmotstånd quantifies how effectively the object can resist these stresses and the resulting deformation, which is known as torsion.

The torsional resistance of a solid object depends on its geometry and the material properties. For a given material, a larger cross-sectional area generally leads to greater torsional resistance. The shape of the cross-section also plays a crucial role; shapes that are more compact and less prone to deforming under shear stress, like circular or rectangular sections with certain aspect ratios, tend to have higher torsional resistance.

Material properties that influence torsionsmotstånd include the shear modulus (G) of the material. A higher shear modulus indicates that the material is stiffer in shear, and thus will resist twisting more effectively. For deformable bodies, the calculation of torsional resistance involves considering the distribution of shear stress and strain throughout the object's cross-section.
