Torrefactionlike refers to processes or phenomena that share similarities with torrefaction, which is a thermal pre-treatment process applied to biomass. Torrefaction involves heating biomass in the absence of oxygen to temperatures typically between 200 and 300 degrees Celsius. This process results in a significant reduction in moisture content, a decrease in volatile matter, and an increase in the energy density of the biomass. The resulting material, often called bio-coal or torrified biomass, has improved fuel properties, making it more suitable for combustion in existing power plants or for gasification.

A process can be considered torrefactionlike if it involves controlled heating of organic material under low-oxygen or oxygen-free conditions to alter its chemical composition and physical properties, leading to increased energy content or improved handling characteristics. This might include certain types of slow pyrolysis or mild hydrothermal carbonization, where the outcomes resemble those of torrefaction, such as dewatering, deoxygenation, and densification. For instance, when discussing the pre-treatment of waste materials for energy recovery, if a method achieves similar fuel upgrades to torrefaction without necessarily being identical in parameters, it might be described as torrefactionlike.
