Torquey

Torquey is a term often used informally to describe a vehicle, particularly an engine or a vehicle's performance, that exhibits a strong and responsive pulling power or acceleration, especially at lower engine speeds. It refers to the rotational force produced by an engine, measured in units like pound-feet (lb-ft) or Newton-meters (Nm). High torque generally means the engine can move a heavy load or accelerate quickly from a standstill or at low RPM.

In practical terms, a torquey engine feels powerful and capable of effortless acceleration without needing to rev the engine very high. This characteristic is often desirable in vehicles designed for towing, hauling, or for drivers who prefer a more immediate sense of responsiveness. It can also contribute to a more relaxed driving experience, as less gear shifting may be required to maintain speed or climb hills.

The feeling of "torquey" is subjective but is generally associated with a strong push back into the seat during acceleration. It is distinct from horsepower, which is a measure of how quickly work is done and relates to top-end speed. While both torque and horsepower are important for overall performance, torque is more directly linked to the initial surge of power and the ability to overcome resistance. Different types of engines, such as diesel engines and V8 gasoline engines, are often noted for their strong torque characteristics.
