Toristas

Toristas is a term that emerged in Argentina, particularly during periods of economic instability and high inflation, to describe individuals or entities who hoard US dollars. This practice is often driven by a desire to protect savings from the devaluation of the Argentine peso. The term "torista" itself is derived from the word "dólar" (dollar) and is not an official designation but rather a colloquialism used to identify those who prioritize holding foreign currency over domestic assets.

The motivations behind torismo are primarily economic. In Argentina's history, repeated instances of currency devaluation, hyperinflation, and economic crises have led many citizens to lose confidence in the peso. Consequently, acquiring and holding US dollars, a traditionally more stable currency, became a common strategy for wealth preservation. This can involve physically holding dollar bills, known as "colchón" (mattress) savings, or holding dollar-denominated assets.

Toristas are not a formally organized group. They represent a broad spectrum of the population, from ordinary citizens to businesses, who engage in dollar acquisition due to perceived economic insecurity. The prevalence of torismo can influence economic indicators, such as the demand for dollars in the informal market and the spread between official and parallel exchange rates. Government policies aimed at controlling inflation and stabilizing the economy often seek to reduce the incentives for torismo.
