The name is a portmanteau of onomatopoeia “toot” and a suffix reminiscent of the German word “Tipp” or “tippe” meaning “to tip.” The term emerged in online hobbyist and fan communities in the late 2000s and spread through fan-fiction, tabletop role-playing communities, and maker forums as a whimsical artifact.
